Cloud Nine Audio Installation

Commissioned by Fantasy High Street
Produced by ScreenDeep

A pop-up audio installation for Cloud Nine, a community festival centring on the Cumberland Market Estate in Camden. The commission was designed to fit this years theme, ‘heritage’, with local organisations Old Diorama Arts and West Euston Partnership both celebrating landmark birthdays.

After speaking with residents and community groups local to the Kings Cross and Euston area, an online archive of interviews was created to showcase their stories from the last 40 years. For the festival, sound bites were ‘bottled’ in sweet jars; placing your ear to the opening became a neatly intimate way for audience members to engage with memories and fitting for a village fete ‘feel’. Vistors were also invited to share their stories at the Conversation Booth, an inviting space where audio was captured automatically.

This short collage was created generatively by a programme made using Pure Data. With audio file, duration and playback position all selected at random to present an unbiased snapshot of material from the archive.
